• David M. Kirstein has been actively engaged in aviation legal and policy matters since 1976 when he joined the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB). Mr. Kirstein served in a variety of positions at the CAB, including Executive Assistant to the Chairman and General Counsel under Chairman Cohen and McKinnon and was actively involved in the CAB's implementation of the Airline Deregulation Act. ?In 1982, Mr. Kirstein, at the request of Senator Kassebaum, became Majority Counsel to the Aviation Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce and was instrumental in the passage of the Airport and Airways Improvement Act of 1982.

  Mr. Kirstein has represented domestic and foreign air carriers, airports and aviation suppliers in a broad spectrum of commercial transactions such as negotiations and documentation of aircraft leases, purchases, charters, Aircraft Crew Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) and joint service arrangements, ground handling and maintenance agreements.

  Mr. Kirstein represented aviation clients in a wide range of issues before the Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration including the start-up of new airlines, competition issues and enforcement and hazardous materials issues. In addition, he has represented and advised aviation and other clients on administrative law, antitrust, international data privacy, congressional and criminal investigations, and legislative matters. He has conducted commercial litigation in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Mr. Kirstein has received the AV Peer Review Rating* and is?on the adjunct faculty of the University of Virginia Law School.

they sell and agents & editors want them, so saying that your book is the first in a series or is standalone with series potential isn't an automatic rejection. In fact, agents tell writers to write in their query if it's part of a series of not. If your book depends on the other books for the full storyline completion then say: Title is part of a planned series (like you've already said). If the first book is standalone then say: Title is a stand alone novel with series potential. This means that there can be a series, but the book doesn't depend on it. Having a first book depend on the rest of the books isn't an auto deal breaker. I can name you lots of recent YA series where the first book has a cliffhanger ending: Throne of Glass, Cinder, Under the Never Sky, Divergent. And that's just off the top of my head. All of these books are recent series by debut authors, so it's completely untrue that agents and editors hate series or don't want to hear about them. In fact, the opposite is true. 2) word count will depend on the genre. Sci-fi and fantasy can have higher word counts than say, YA mainstream fiction. If your book is good, then you can definitely get away with a high word count and I know of some debut YA novels that have been able to do this, so a word count that's a bit high (I don't think this is) is not an absolute killer for a novel if the writing is great and the premisse is interesting. A lot of what Steve said mght have been true years ago, but publishing is contstantly changing and tommorrow might be something completely different. Now, I might agree with him that it could be too long, I'll have to read it first. I don't have time right now, but I'll answer tomorrow if the question is still open. & a query letter needs to be enticing. There are some long queries that caught an agents attention. So, it goes to show that there are no absolutes in publishing. Catch an agent's attention with a great query letter and a great novel and you can break as many of the so-called rules as you want. But, don't be fooled, an overly long query is a sign of many problems (usually editing issues).

My father in law prefers to deal with real estate and leaves divorce, criminal and other cases to other attorneys. He also represents firms interest in regard to legal issues and will do trials but focus is real state. No mid-night calls to bail somebody out of jail, no messy family matters with divorce. Mon thru Fri, 9-5 which are normal business hours. Much of his time is researching deeds, liens and surveys or contract reviews and closings.. . I also know several other attorney's that after a number of years focused on real estate. While most states do not recognize a law specialty, you can choose to focus your legal practice in a particular field.. . Good Luck!
