• Matthew Schenk was named Partner at Ottenwess, Taweel & Schenk, PLC in August 2013 to head up the firm's new Governmental Affairs practice group. Prior to joining the firm, Schenk served as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) where he assisted the department in resolving a thirty-six year old court action involving environmental compliance. As part of that effort, Schenk worked to create operational independence for the utility in the areas of Law, Finance, Human Resources and Procurement.

  Before his appointment to DWSD's Executive Management Team, Schenk served in various roles within Wayne County government, including Chief of Staff to the County Executive, Assistant County Executive, and Principal Attorney supervising the Municipal Law section of the County's Law Department. As Chief of Staff, Schenk managed various County departments, supervised nearly 2,000 employees, and had responsibility for the development and implementation process for Wayne County’s $2 billion annual budget. Schenk also worked on numerous regional initiatives, including the expansion of Cobo Center, the creation of a regional transit plan for Southeast Michigan, and the development of the Aerotropolis.

  Before coming to Wayne County, Schenk worked for the City of Detroit for seven years within both the legislative and executive branches of government. His last position in that period of service to the City was in the Law Department as Legislative Assistant Corporation Counsel.

  Schenk earned his law degree from Wayne State University and was admitted to the Michigan Bar Association in 1996. He also holds two bachelor's degrees from the University of Michigan. He is involved in numerous professional organizations, community affiliations, and civic boards, notably recently completing his second term as Chairman of the Board for the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART).

Your sense of communication is pretty good. I do, however, sense a tone in your letter that you're trying to come across a little too fancy.. . With writing, especially this kind of writing, remember that when you're editing, whatever doesn't kill it makes it stronger.. . I'd be inclined to scratch the first paragraph and start with the second. Instead of "I'm applying for a job..." (duh!), start off with "I have proven customer service skills..." It would make your letter a bit different from the other they're reading, but why not start out right from the get go by stating your qualifications. After you've told them the qualities you have, then say you're looking for a job with their company.. . I also don't like starting a letter with "I'm writing today..." Anything you can put "Duh!" behind and it doesn't look out of place, cut it. Of course you're writing today. Everybody uses that as an intro, but when you look at it, those are meaningless words. Get to the meat as soon as possible.. . Spell out anything below 10. " I have two and one-half years..." Better yet would be "I have more than two years experience..." Then you don't have to use clunky percentages and your paragraph will read more smoothly.. . Don' start sentences without the "I am..." etc. Say "I am available..." instead of "Available..." be as efficient with your words as possible, but don't leave out the little words to make your writing more readable.. . Try to rewrite in a more plain-English tone. Don't try to use big words or fancy words.

I am not sure what the question is. is it. How many people have estate planning done?. How many estate plans are challenged in court?. Or something else?. Or are you talking about wills? which is a only a part of estate planning?

My last name is my fathers lastname, which is my adoptive fathers real last name, neither me or my dad have ever met my step-grandfather, so I want to change my name to my Grandmothers name, who has the family name, I need to know how to officially change my last name, also what age I need to be, thanks.
