If people don't go through professionals with this, as they should, there are a zillion ways to get scammed. (Or about 3 zillion if you go through Craigslist!) See an attorney, go through all the typical steps one goes through buying a house, because if you don't, it's very easy to get scammed with faked quitclaim deeds, papers, etc. The other party can end up with your mortgage-free house, and you end up with a house they had no right to sell (eg, an empty house with an out of state or country property owner) -- so you end up with nothing (or maybe less than nothing, because you took out a chunk of savings to pay for the difference in house value), and good luck getting your house back, it's not as easy as it should be. You'd have to hire an attorney at a cost of many thousands of dollars, the cops/DA don't have time for this kind of thing, and it's something that would need to be expedited asap before the property is resold.. . Usually house swaps work best when both properties are local. Developers sometimes do them to diversify their holdings.. . You can find places online that handle house swaps, but it's really a good idea to speak to a professional, real estate agent, attorney, etc. It's not wise to skimp on paying professionals on such a big transaction. Often reviews about these websites are obviously written by shills, as the success of house swaps doesn't seem to be nearly what they profess, or as easy.. . Good luck!
