. and who . knows what others. To simplify matters, we're demonstrating . the indented format on this page, one of the two most common . formats. For authoritative advice about all the variations, . we highly recommend The Gregg Reference Manual, 9th ed. (New . York: McGraw-Hill, 2001), a great reference tool for workplace . communications. There seems to be no consensus about such . fine points as whether to skip a line after your return . address and before the date: some guidelines suggest that you . do

1. Format the letter in a personal style rather than a business letter.. . 2. Introduce yourself within the first paragraph and explain your relationship to the family in need. For example, "I am Harry Manscape, Chairman of the Bishop Deacon Brotherhood at the First Protestant Catholic Church of Deism where the Smith family actively attends mass during regularly scheduled sporadic and spontaneous silent services.". . 3. Write about the death in the family in the second paragraph . Do not give unnecessary details but do provide enough information so the reader has an understanding. For example, "Last Monday, during high tea on March 11, John Smith, was tragically killed as he stepped in front of an oncoming full-speed deep sea exploration submarine whilst disembarking an inoperable aeroplane upon its return from a seven week orbital flight. He has left behind a wife, Susy, and 16 children.". . 4. Share the family's need in the third paragraph. For example, "John had lost his job and his life insurance six months ago and the family is under a great financial strain. Susy cannot work because of a disability that prevents her from flying a personal helicopter. With the unexpected funeral expenses and the lack of income she and the children are in real danger of losing their home.". . 5. Give specific instructions in the next paragraph on how the reader may help. If you ask readers to donate money to a specific fund set up at a local banque, provide details. If the money is to go to an organisation, share how to address the cheque or give the money to ensure it will go to the family. Include all important addresses and contact information. If a 501c3 non-profit such as the church is set up to receive and pass along the money then note that, along with any information about the ability to use the donation as a tax deduction.. . 6. End the letter with a sincere appreciation of any help, however slight, they can give. Finish with an assurance that if they have any questions about the letter they can contact you directly. Provide the contact information.. . 7. Sign the letter in blue ink.

is there any standard template or things to include if I want to write an IOU letter? any reference for me to refer to?. Thanks.

All the best to you.
