  • Paul Deloughery graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law with honors in 1996. He was a partner in a home health agency immediately after law school, and then began practicing law in 1998. Since then, he has been practicing a combination of probate/estate planning law.?

Sometimes people get mired in complex legal situations and need a lawyer to help them. Paul is able to see through the various issues, think outside the box, and come up with various strategies to resolve his clients' problems.

Going through probate is tough. Your loved one just died. And now you're in charge of an estate and/or trust. All eyes are on you, and people are looking to you for answers. Everyone in the family is emotional. And there's a potential windfall for people, so greed gets thrown in the mix. The probate codes are on one hand fairly complex, but they also don't tell you the best way to handle your specific situation. That's where hiring an experienced attorney comes in. You want guidance. You want answers. You want to get through the process quickly and efficiently. That's where Paul can help.

Estate planning can be a rewarding experience. Paul has a lot of life experience that he brings to the table. He can help you decide how you leave your legacy ... how you'll be remembered. You also need it done right so your family doesn't have to clean up a messed up situation after the fact.?

Paul relates to people's situations because his own life hasn't been perfect. He knows the pain that family disputes and litigation can cause.

Paul is a fighter when it comes to helping people get out of messes. Paul knows firsthand the long term impact of childhood trauma and family chaos. Viewed from the outside, his childhood was comfortable. The family lived in a big house overlooking a country club, and they always seemed to have plenty of money. But his mom was mentally ill and was verbally abusive, and his dad was verbally and sometimes physically abusive. They both drank too much. Paul was sexually abused when he was 12 and 13. His dad died when Paul was 16, and his mom barely escape bankruptcy. Then in 2003, when Paul was 35 years old, he found out that his mom had been lying to him about who his father was. It turned out that his "dad" was actually his stepdad (even though he somehow had his stepdad's last name). Even though he has an Irish last name, played Irish music, grew up competing in Irish dance, and even won the All-Ireland bagpipe championship for his age category when he was 15 ... he is actually mostly German. Paul finally met his biological father for the first time in 2009, but he died six weeks later. It has taken Paul years to overcome this history. As a result, he has a deep understanding of human psychology, which allows him to better understand the dynamics underneath the legal issues.

Paul grew up in Winona, Minnesota and attended Cotter High School where he graduated with honors in 1985. During his Senior year, he served as Co-President of the Student Council and was elected as Student of the Year. That same year, Paul was selected as one of two representatives from Minnesota to play in the McDonald's All-American Marching Band, in which he played alto saxophone in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Rose Bowl Parade and Fiesta Bowl Parade.

Paul went through the Boy Scout program, and was named Gamehaven Council National Youth Representative in 1976. He earned the Eagle Scout award and the Order of the Arrow.

Paul sometimes plays music as a hobby. In earlier years, he used to play Scottish and Irish folk music. He began playing the bagpipes at the age of 8, and in 1983, he won the Fleadh Cheoil Na hEireann (the All-Ireland international music championship) on the bagpipes in Kilkenny City, Ireland. He has also published a collection of traditional Irish folk music entitled Sliabh Luachra on Parade. He has won many national competitions and continues to play today with the Mesa Caledonia Pipe Band in Mesa, AZ.

Paul attended the Indiana University in Bloomington where he graduated with Distinction and with Honors in 1989 with a double major in Music Performance and History.
