Good advice above. A manager is also a change agent who needs to build a team by assembling the best people he can get to make needed changes to his business in line with the corporate strategy set by those over you.. . As a new manager, you need to understand the corporate vision and your section's part in getting your organization to change and become more competitive and effective in the marketplace. You need to be tuned into management to be sure you understand the vision.. . You need to understand the vision so you can communicate it effectively to your employees. Basically, you are selling this vision to your people. Selling means you need to build relationships with your employees because YOUR EMPLOYEES make the changes, not you and management.. . You need to establish an open-door policy and free up lines of communication so your employees may address their concerns, and you may task them according to their skills, experience, and abilities.. . For each project, you need to set deadlines for the project, assign responsibilities, reward behavior that meets deadlines, and have a plan to avert failure, and budget accordingly. But most of all, you need to battle for budget money to TRAIN your employees and empower them with skills and tools to implement change effectively. In effect, lay out the vision, show them how to take charge, let them take charge and do their assigned jobs, and reward them effectivley (like a party at HOOTERS!!!!!!!) once they complete the project.. . You need to set metrics that your employees can agree on to measure job performance and see that everything is available for your employees to meet those metrics. Monitor and evaluate, and always, always, always communicate with your employees and provide feedback. Keep them in the loop.. . Graduate school is about implementing change in the work force and gives you several tools you can implement. Among them are Microsoft Project, WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), defining a critical path, laying out your vision for the project and its objectives, assigning tasks appropriately, and budgeting and performance templates. It also gives you ideas on how to reward employees and evaluate the team's performance.. . The manager is really a coach. In a football game, the coach does not play on the field. He lays out his vision by communicating with the quarterbacks and team captains, and they communicate it to the team who executes the play. It is the manager's job to build a good team through communication and training so the team empowers themselves to get the job done.. . Plan, budget, communicate, and train. Then let'em loose and see what they do for you.
