Often (because not all are) this is done for a specific stylistic intention of the author, usually to relate perspective. Through the letter, the author can create the character of the writer of the letter and use that as the lens through which the events are related. Usually letter books are coupled with response letters which can supply an alternative perspective or are coupled with a narrative voice which does the same. Letter format can often suggest a more subjective or biased account of the events relayed because the format clearly demonstrates that the information contained in the letters comes from one person's point of view rather than from some unbiased, universal account.. . Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an excellent example.. While the text's body is a narrated first person account (and reflection) of the life and creation of the "monster" by Victor Frankenstein, the novel itself is framed by letters from a sea captain sailing to the North Pole to his sister back in England. From these letters, the reader gets to see not only what happens to Victor and his creation but an understanding of what they are like from an external perspective rather than just Victor's own. The letters shed new light on Victor's character, allowing us to see the remorse, derangement, and pathetic state which his own personal understanding of himself would never reveal.

A member of my family has a hyphenated surname. For years he has been using a shortened version of his name which he much prefers but this causes him problems as everywhere he is registered by the longer, hyphenated surname. He wants to legally change his name to the short version to prevent all the problems but is terminally short of cash. I have found him a website where he can download a proforma deed poll form to change his surname but are these legal? Does he actually need the expense of getting a solicitor to do this for him?.
