  • Mr. Thomas is a Hudson Valley native who, as an associate at the firm, specializes in all aspects of commercial real estate practice. He devotes a considerable amount of time to commercial real estate financing transactions, representing borrowers and lenders with respect to acquisition and construction loans, re-financings and workouts and has represented major U.S. banks in everything from small commercial loans to multi-billion dollar lending transactions. He also has considerable experience representing real estate fund sponsors and investors in the formation and subscription of real estate and infrastructure-based funds. In addition, Mr. Thomas is well versed in the acquisition and disposition of both commercial and residential real property.

    Mr. Thomas graduated from Bucknell University with a dual B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology and from New York University with a M.A. in history (with an area of focus in early American legal history). In 2007, he received his Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Albany Law Review, a member of the Justinian Society and the recipient of the Dean Sponsler Honor's Teaching Fellowship. While in law school, he published his law review note, entitled Necessary Protection: An Examination of the State Farm v. Campbell Standards Test and Why Economically Efficient Rules Do Not Work at the Intersection Between Due Process and Punitive Damages, 70 ALB. L. REV. 367 (2006).

    Immediately upon graduating from law school, Mr. Thomas joined the New York City office of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, where, as an associate, he specialized in all aspects of commercial real estate law, with particular attention paid to fund formation and investment and commercial real estate lending. After leaving Jones Day, and immediately prior to joining Van DeWater and Van DeWater, Mr. Thomas worked in house at a start-up company specializing in the distribution and installation of modular in-plant offices and other commercial pre-fabricated structures throughout the U.S.

    He is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Dutchess County Bar Association and is admitted to practice in New York State.

    In his spare time, Mr. Thomas enjoys hiking, kayaking, sailing and the study of history. He resides in Orange County with his wife and miniature schnauzer.

I am not simply speaking of getting a real estate license, being accepted by a broker that will allow you to work with him/her.. . There are certain things that you must be able to do in order to strive and survive in the real estate career industry.. . #1. You must obtain the necessary classes either on-line, classroom, or through a real estate school in order to qualify to take the California real estate exam.. . #2. You must be able to successfully pass the California real estate license exam. . #3. You need to be a people person. . #4. You must be willing to help other people. . #5. You must be able to work long long hours each day. . #6. The weekend is the best selling time of all other days of the week.. . #7. You must be able to keep your real estate license by continuing education. . #8. You would be required to pay desk space as well as telephone, fax and copy usage prior to your first sell.. . #9. Prepare for the learning curve prior to selling your first home.. . These are just a few of the things required to be in the real estate industry. If you feel as if you are able to overcome these many obstacles, prepare a viable business plan to be successful then you will do well even if real estate industry was not booming.. . You will find that the Los Angeles area and the San Francisco are are very very different. You will have to determine which are you are most interesting in residing. Southern California is known for excellent beaches and weather. San Francisco has it's good points and points of interest and is near the wine country as well as the technology center of the world.. . Rent is very expensive in either area. Don't expect to pay for alike # of bedrooms you are paying in the dreaded Pittsburgh as you would be paying in San Francisco or Los Angeles. The cost of purchasing houses are a lot more than the medium price you would pay in Pittsburgh.
