  • Van DeWater and Van DeWater LLP was established in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1914 by John B. Van DeWater. His son, Robert B. Van DeWater, joined him in the practice of law in 1950. Since those historic beginnings, the firm has carried on a tradition of excellence.

Today, every client matter is assigned to a partner who is responsible for managing and coordinating all of the legal services required for that case. The firm then works as a team comprised of lawyers and paralegals who provide legal assistance appropriate to each of their strengths. Working in this way, we are innovative problem solvers, creative strategists and trusted advisors. We deliver value to our clients by helping them achieve their objectives through an efficient, collaborative, personalized and cost-effective effort.

We strive for resolutions to civil disputes whether inside or outside the courtroom. We are equally practiced in matters ranging from crisis management to routine closings. Our litigators are well acquainted with state and federal laws allowing them to skillfully maneuver their way through difficult channels. Yet, we always explore settlement options, counsel our clients in risk avoidance, and attempt to assess for them the potential costs and benefits of proceeding with litigation.

At the same time, we serve the needs of clients who value extensive trial and appellate experience, solid case preparation, and insightful strategic planning. We understand our clients' priorities and the forces driving their decisions.

Our dedication to the highest standards of legal excellence is demonstrated daily in everything we do.

Can my health insurance ask for reimbursement from car insurance?

I have been spelling my first name two different ways since I could write, and I finally figured out why. The name on my birth certificate has an extra letter than the name on my social security card. I only know now because I just got a job and they required a copy of my social security card. My parents held my birth certificate and security card in fear that I would get an ID and do bad things, I guess. (I turn 21 in a couple of days.) I don't know if this is a huge problem, but if it will mess me up in the long run, I need to know, is it absolutely imperative that I get this fixed? Will it affect anything with my job? I noticed that when they send me letters in the mail for benefits, they use the name on my social security card. . Also, I want to go by the spelling that is on my birth certificate, and not the name with the missing letter on my social security card. That's the name I go by. I figured since my schools never called me on it, and at school our social is your student ID, that it wasn't a problem..
