• In addition to her practice, Melanie is the distinguished practitioner in residence at Seton Hall Law School, where her research is focusing on the use of the membership model in nonprofit governance and the application charitable trust law to the relationship among parent companies, subsidiary corporations and foundations.

  In addition to having served as associate counsel to the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Melanie focuses on the negotiation and design of governance structures of national and regional health systems, mergers, joint operating companies between regional systems and community-based religiously affiliated corporation and non-religiously affiliated corporations. She has advised social service agencies in the development of integrated delivery networks and in First Amendment challenges to access by religiously affiliated organizations to government contracts.

  Melanie represented several Catholic charities agencies in Bowen v. Kendrick, in the remand by the Supreme Court to the district court for a finding of fact concerning the actual operations of the government purchase of service contracts. In addition to property, tort and contract litigation, she has participate in litigation involving challenges to corporate control, especially in membership corporations and the representation of religious employers in employment matters.

  Melanie has served as a consultant to religious congregations in developing transitional governance structures for health, education and social service corporations and as a mediator in inter corporate conflicts.

  As director of public policy of SSM Health Care System, St. Louis, Missouri, she analyzed legislation and directed lobbying and community outreach activities of the SSM Health Care System.

  She has taught classes at Duquesne University Law School and Seton Hall Law School in health care law, nonprofit corporations and alternative dispute resolution. One of her major interests is the integration of Catholic social teaching in such courses as labor law, pension law, health care and family law. She has also been a faculty member for nonprofit education programs of the Pennsylvania Bar Institute.

  Melanie is an author and a frequent speaker, both nationally and internationally, on matters concerning management, governance and legal issues for religiously affiliated corporations. In addition to many articles on canon law and corporate governance, her publications include Chapter 14, Impact of Canon Law on Health Care Delivery, the Aspens Hospital Contract Manual and Desk Reference Integrated Delivery Network manual, Catholic Charities USA.

  Melanie has received the Distinguished Alumna Award by Duquesne University Law Alumni Association and the Service to the Community Award of the Columbus 500 of Westmoreland County, PA.

  Melanie was instrumental in initiating the Anglican-Roman Catholic Colloquium on matters of civil and canon law of each tradition, which is sponsored by Duquesne University School of Law, Cardiff University in Wales and University of St. Thomas in Rome.

  Community service has included work with several health, education and social service community boards. She has completed the Executive Management Program of the United Way, National Academy for Volunteerism, Harvard Graduate School of Business, 1984-85.

My oldest daughter lives on an Air Force base in S Dakota. Her husband is being deployed for 6 months. We reside in California and my 15yr old daughter would like to go stay with her sister for the duration of this deployment.
