The name on your social security card can be changed by one of 3 ways: 1) Divorce 2)marriage 3)Legal name change... The first two are self explanatory..You take legal papers into the SS office and they make the changes..They will send you a new SS card with name change...I don't know how much it cost in your state to change your name legally, however you can go into the county clerk and find out..You can go into the law library at most court houses and ask the librarian to give your the book that has the legal papers and make a copy of the papers that you will need to file..make copies of everything in triplicate..Courts like plenty of paper..Don't ask me why!! I'm still questioning that myself...Find out the filing fee..File the paper for name change..you will have to appear before the judge..when you do all of this you will get the necessary document you need to have your name changed..You can also get legal papers from most county clerks offices for free. It only cost when you file the papers at the court house. Also, you can probably find the necessary documents and most legal documents of all kinds at Office Depot and Staples, and stores like the same. You don't need a lawyer to do this for you.
However, with all of that said, courts are reluctant to expunge criminal records. They do so if the action appears to benefit the community, and if the person is truly someone who is a good member of the community and having a criminal record no longer serves any purpose for that person. Courts typically expunge misdemeanor records.
