According to the I-751 instructions, USCIS can excuse the late filing if you submitted an explanation.. Hopefully you did explain the delay when you mailed the I-751. The fact that the check was cashed. is no guarantee of reconsideration but it seems you have a good chance if you previously submitted the wrong form.

If your grandfather didn't want to support his son either, is that really a name you want to be carrying?. . I wouldn't do it. Like your last name isn't bad, its not like Slug or some weird thing. Its going to hurt your family, and if you ever have kids, they aren't going to have the same last name as their grandparents, it would be strange for them.
