A Power of Attorney (POA) doesn't have a shelf life per se, but a person who gives power of attorney to someone else may revoke it at any time. Or the language in the poa may provide an expiration time period in some form. You must read it carefully to see if any such expiration language exists.. . POA's don't always look official. Some may have the letterhead logo of an attorney or law office, but some look rather plain. But there "is" standard language for a poa that should be reflected in yours. You can see examples on the internet or in a popular self-help publisher's book by NOLO. The put out CD's for do it yourself people, and you just fill in the poa blanks.. . You may see a notary stamp on the signature page, but some requirements only need two or more witnesses and a notary not required. When in doubt for your particular state, you can check the Michigan rules for Powers of Attorney.. . You cannot always judge the validity of a poa on it's looks. You may have a perfectly legal document in your hands, even though it doesn't look like the way we think it 'should' look.
