  • Pete Thurlow is a patent attorney and IP coordinator for Jones Day's worldwide patent prosecution group. He has experience in all aspects of domestic and international patent prosecution, including post-grant ex parte and inter partes proceedings. In addition, Pete has experience providing patentability, freedom to operate, and invalidity opinions in the mechanical and electrical arts. He provides litigation support for patent litigations in the district courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He also provides IP due diligence counseling for corporate transactions.

    Pete was appointed to serve a three-year term on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Public Advisory Committee ("PPAC") starting in November 2012. PPAC is a nine-member advisory committee that includes senior advisors from business, academia, and private law practice. PPAC was created in 1999 to advise the Director of the USPTO on patent matters relating to the USPTO's policies, performance, and fees. In addition, PPAC submits an annual report to the President, Secretary of Commerce, and the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.

    Pete is the chairperson of the Patent Law Committee for the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA). He represents the NYIPLA at USPTO meetings to discuss proposed changes to improve patent quality and the patent examination process. Pete has been active in the implementation of the America Invents Act (AIA). In February 2012, he testified on behalf of the NYIPLA at the USPTO with respect to the USPTO's proposed AIA fee schedule. In September 2012, he represented the NYIPLA at the USPTO's first inventor to file roundtable and coordinated the USPTO's America Invents Act?road show in New York.

    Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Pete worked as a mechanical and electrical engineer, operating electric power plants and electric transmission and distribution substations.
