  • Shannon Ort is a founding partner of Terzich and Ort, LLP. She devotes her practice exclusively to family law focusing on divorce, custody, child support, spousal maintenance and paternity matters. I went down to he social security building ask for a green card (that's a name change card, don't get scared). They will ask you are you changing your name to hide from paying taxes or debt(hopefully those are not your reasons for the change). fill the green card out , hand it back to them.. Basically, you can change your name by first notifying social security of your intent.. Then everything thereafter you sign, sign it with your new name. Get legal documentation in your new name, such as a driver's license, passport, if you are under the age of drivers lic. just get a identification card (legal from dmv). anybody that you correspond with tell them of your new name to have them mail you. credit cards, cable bill, telephone bill etcetra. these are things that are binding by law and can be used for identification. Don't forget to get a library card. After using it for 2 years consecutively it automatically becomes legal.
