Your colleague is correct. Hospitals not only pass the cost of treating the uninsured off onto paying patients by over-billing their insurance, but they also put a lien on any property an uninsured person may own. The law may exempt some possessions (I'm not sure here) from liens, but I know that if a poor person without insurance owns a trailer home or a little hovel down in the ghetto, the hospital will put a lien on it to help recover the cost of treating the uninsured person. They actually cause homelessness by doing this.. . Medicaid DOES NOT cover everyone who is poor. And they certainly won't cover your medical expenses if you incur them BEFORE you are eligible.. . This is where patients find those proverbial $10 Tylenol pills on their bills when they closely inspect them for errors. If there were some kind of natural disaster leading to hundred or a thousand of uninsured hospital patients needing medical care, all charges will rise in the future to cover the debts the hospital will incur treating those uninsured people. Sometimes charities pitch in to help, but usually some form of telethon or begathon will take place to raise some of the funds. Otherwise, be prepared to bring your own Tylenol next time you have to use the local hospital.
