If you are writing a "Letter to the Editor", this falls under the category of persuasive writing and therefore HOW you present your case is usually more important than the case itself.. . I'll critique some of your points above and that can help get the idea I'm conveying here and give you some ideas as well.. . Who is this Editor? School Newspaper? New York Times? Conservatives Weekly? Fascist Dictatorships Digest? It important to know your intended audience.. . From an adults perspective (namely mine), your contention that random drug testing doesn't give teenagers any privacy seems strange. What do you mean by privacy? Are students to be gathered in a Hall all at one with the ten lottery winners to be paraded publicly up to the testing? Or would it be handled behind closed doors or via letter to your parents, etc. This "privacy" is nebulous so you would need to explain why or how your schools implementation plan is faulty.. . Plus, your contention that teenagers will break the rules more just because they are angry at not being trusted? Trust is something that is earned. How can the School admins trust the students who can't even follow an old "no chewing gum" rule. See what I mean?. . Why should parents be told beforehand? This is random testing, right? Presumably, those to be tested and those doing the testing will both find out at the last second. How can parents be informed beforehand for a random event later. By definition, it would no longer be random... As for parents having no control over their kids, the school assumes a guardianship role when children are in/on it's grounds during school hours and functions. This is something parents have given up in order to see their children receive and education. They can do homeschooling if they want control over they're children.. . It's both the Individual and Society's responsibilities to keep it's children as safe as possible. Drug testing can serve as a deterrent and a method of removing dangerous elements from an area that needs to be safe. Remember, taking/selling/possessing drugs is illegal... The same way murder and robbery are illegal. Are parents supposed to be the only ones to teach that as well? Be serious.. . Random testing isn't that expensive when compared to result of not actually testing. However, a 'random' system is essentially unfair. All students should be tested as part of their yearly physical and be a requirement much like vaccinations. It's for the public health, after all.... . I think more teenagers take drugs that you realize. To say only a small percentage would require a 3rd party study that you reference to make your argument.
