Life settlement. A transaction in which a life insurance policy holder sells his/her policy to a third party. The situation occurs when the policy's fair market value exceeds the cash surrender value that the insurance company offers. The third party is known as a life settlement provider, who, in the United States, must abide by applicable state regulations. The life settlement provider becomes the policy's new beneficiary, is responsible for maintaining premiums, and, upon the death of the insured person, receives the benefit. The secondary market for life insurance began growing in the last part of the twentieth century.

format:. . Dear Principal xxxxxx. . I am writing this letter as a result of my growing concern over some vulgar and hateful language being used during classes by an employee of your school. Mr. xxxxx xxxx the xxxx coach has been using discriminatory language which demeans black, poor, and gay students. For example his regular vocabulary includes: "Nig***", "fa***t", and "poor as*." This language disgraceful and makes my son feel incredibly uncomfortable. Teachers and students should not be blasting this type of language at one another regardless of how they speak on their personal time when not on school property.. . I will refrain from signing my name or the name of my son at this point because I do not want Mr. xxxxxxx to discover the identity of my son and make his school life miserable out of revenge. I would not go so far as to say that he should lose his job right now but I insist that you speak with him and then write a page of "polite communications guidelines" which can be handed to both faculty and students with no specific target indicated so that my son and I will know that an adult has taken notice of this situation. If the behavior does not stop soon I will be forced to escalate this complaint further.. . Signed: Concerned Parent.

This came up in a discussion in class today. If it is illegal to discriminate on gender, why do job applications forms often require you to identify your gender either with a Male/Female question or a Mr, Ms, Miss, Mrs title? I know people can say that that's OK so long as it isn't used to discriminate but what is the point of the identification unless it is used as a screening question?. . Alex.
