  • "Spike"?was our senior member of the firm, having joined it in 1960 after serving as an officer in the Army's Judge Advocate Generals Corps.? He is now enjoying retirement.

While Spike had primarily been a litigator over the years, he also had extensive experience in transactional work. He was?convinced that his litigation experience was of enormous value to his transactional work, and vice-versa.

    Philosophy

Spike expresses his philosophy about the practice of law as follows:

When I go to battle for a client, I see it to be my duty to fight with every ounce of energy I have.? And I've been blessed with a great deal of energy. My long experience and battle scars have taught me, however, that a lawyer best serves his client by knowing when to fight and when not to fight. This is true in both litigation and transactional work. My job is to solve my client's problem as quickly and inexpensively as possible – and, hopefully, convince the lawyer on the other side that this is his or her job also.

Litigation ExperienceSpike has tried hundreds of cases sitting first chair. The wide variety of lawsuits he has tried over the years has served him well.? More recently, he has devoted his trial practice to litigation involving complex commercial matters, oil and gas and environmental issues, while still being involved in railroad cases and products liability litigation.

Transactional ExperienceSpike?was involved in the negotiation and drafting of complex contracts, agreements, leases, and other business transactions. He also advised clients on liability aspects of their businesses.

  • The firm was founded in 1876, when Franklin A. Gallaugher moved to Lake Charles from East Baton Rouge Parish and established a law practice. Many prominent members of the bar and pioneers of the community have been associated with the firm, including Lt. Col. Gabriel Fournet, Arsene P. Pujo, Clement D. Moss, Cullen R. Liskow, and Thomas F. Porter.

Mr. Porter joined the firm in 1936 after serving sixteen years as a judge for the Fourteenth Judicial District Court. In 1959, he and John D. Stewart were practicing under the name of Porter and Stewart when the first of the firm's present members, John B. Scofield , joined the firm as an associate. Mr. Scofield left shortly thereafter to serve in the U. S. Army. At the completion of his tour of duty, however, he returned to practice with the firm and thereafter became a partner.

The firm continued to evolve and grow. Of its present members, Richard E. Gerard, Jr. joined the firm in 1969, as did J. Michael Veron in 1978. Scott J. Scofield and John R. Pohorelsky became associated with the firm in 1984, and were followed by Patrick D. Gallaugher, Jr. , a great-grandson of the firm''s founder, in 1985. Robert E. Landry joined the firm in 1988, followed by Rusty J. Stutes, Jr. in 1992. C. Eston Singletary, an established attorney in the Lake Charles area, made a lateral move to join the firm in 1992. Todd Fontenot became associated with the firm in 1996. Phillip DeVilbiss and Chris Guillet joined the firm in 1999. Toni L. Petrofes and Jody Lavergne joined the firm in 2001.
