• The firm was founded in 1876, when Franklin A. Gallaugher moved to Lake Charles from East Baton Rouge Parish and established a law practice. Many prominent members of the bar and pioneers of the community have been associated with the firm, including Lt. Col. Gabriel Fournet, Arsene P. Pujo, Clement D. Moss, Cullen R. Liskow, and Thomas F. Porter.

  Mr. Porter joined the firm in 1936 after serving sixteen years as a judge for the Fourteenth Judicial District Court. In 1959, he and John D. Stewart were practicing under the name of Porter and Stewart when the first of the firm's present members, John B. Scofield , joined the firm as an associate. Mr. Scofield left shortly thereafter to serve in the U. S. Army. At the completion of his tour of duty, however, he returned to practice with the firm and thereafter became a partner.

  The firm continued to evolve and grow. Of its present members, Richard E. Gerard, Jr. joined the firm in 1969, as did J. Michael Veron in 1978. Scott J. Scofield and John R. Pohorelsky became associated with the firm in 1984, and were followed by Patrick D. Gallaugher, Jr. , a great-grandson of the firm''s founder, in 1985. Robert E. Landry joined the firm in 1988, followed by Rusty J. Stutes, Jr. in 1992. C. Eston Singletary, an established attorney in the Lake Charles area, made a lateral move to join the firm in 1992. Todd Fontenot became associated with the firm in 1996. Phillip DeVilbiss and Chris Guillet joined the firm in 1999. Toni L. Petrofes and Jody Lavergne joined the firm in 2001.

You're correct....if you have your name legally changed, all those other documents will have to be changed as well. It can get rather pricey. This will vary from state to state, but you can expect to drop at least a hundred bucks to complete the name change process. I've heard some folks spending upwards of $400. Again, just depends on court costs in your area.. . A legal name change that is not a result of getting married requires a name change form from the county in which you live. Usually, the county will require you to have people who know you complete affidavits affirming that you are sane and competent and indicate why you want the name change. Once you file your name change form and any additional affidavits, the courts will notify you to advertise the change before the court date mandated to finish the process. The notice will appear in the local newspapers under legal notices (check your newspapers for their rates). After that, a court date will be set and you'll go through the formality of telling the court why you want to change your name. These are usually quick and painless--unless someone objects.
