I am not sure you should say anything about payment or compensation because it doesn't look professional upon an initial job inquiry, and you wouldn't want to run the risk of getting paid less than they might have offered you if you hadn't said anything. So just don't mention compensation in your email. Wait for them to respond and let them lead in that area.. .
