Alberich said it best -- All music has form. (I'm paraphrasing). . There's an important difference to a piece of music having FORM, vs. having **A** form. If we stumble across a piece of music that doesn't fit into any of our model categories of binary form, ternary, rondo, sonata, etc etc, that doesn't mean that the piece is formless. Are there different sections of the piece? Different ideas presented? Changing instrumentation? All of these things (and many others) can be used to discover the form of a piece of music. Even their absence can define form.. . Free form, in as much as it means "freedom from preconceived ideas of form" is just fine!
