The name on your application will have to match the name associated with your social security. . This is especially important if you have applied for financial aid, so the name and SSN will have to match.. Everything else you sign serve as legal contracts and documents when you enroll. If the name is not your legal name, that will draw a lot of suspicion. . Even if for some reason you are able to pass this off, having a different name on your degree will make employers question if that degree really belongs with you.. . Use your legal name on all official documents. And you can tell your friends and professors to call you by whatever nickname you choose.

legal name-change?

I'm looking at an online service to change my name via deedpoll, I'm wondering whether this is the be all and end all of changing your name? Will this then legally be my name? Or is this a scam and I need to change it through a different method?.

Web Hosting?

I'm becoming more and more confused when writing a cover letter. Do you just give your details, the books details like the genre and that's it? How many pages do you think should be in a cover letter?

The issue here as far as the IRS is concerned is your Tax Home. You can read about it for yourself in Publication 463. Click the first link below to pull up an Adobe copy. Go to Page 3 and read under the heading TAX HOME. The first hurdle you need to clear is not having your own "residence". Based on your posting you could be subject to consideration as an Itinerant. IF this happens then you are considered to "never be away from your tax home" so you would not be able to deduct ANY business-related travel expenses.. . The problem with using your girlfriends address is that you are likely not listed on her lease. Nor are the utilities in your name. You likely could not produce documentary evidence establishing you as a "resident" of Florida.. . One thing you can do as a "work around" for this is to get YOUR OWN mailing address. So stop by an office supply store and pick up one of those pre-printed Limited Power Of Attorney forms [get a few of 'em for practice]. Fill in the blanks with your GF's name and what-not and list it as being for the restricted use of purchasing a PO Box. Then have her go to one of the Mailbox Stores and rent you a box.. . HINT: My best advice is to NOT get the box from the post office. Why? Because if you do then your box is going to get stuffed full of all that Junk Mail Cr_p that you normally get through the mail. I can't speak for any of the other mailbox stores but we use a UPS Store for our business mail. When I signed the contract I was able to designate that I did NOT want junk mail...and I don't get it. Then you only give out that address to who you want to get mail from. List the address on your tax returns. Many businesses use this method and use the word "Suite" to designate the box number. We prefer not to do that since ethical treatment of the public is such a big deal in our industry. We just list our box as "#121" and let the public come to their own conclusions. Another advantage of using a mailbox store is that they will "forward" your mail with just a phonecall. If you know you're going to be in Flagstaff for a week starting in a few days, you can call the store and ask them to forward your mail. You can either give them a specific address [the hotel you'll be at?] or have them send it to General Delivery at the main post office there and you can call for it.. . NOW you have a mailing address. Although having your name on a residential lease and on utilities would be a Slam-Dunk, having it on the mailbox lease agreement can be used for substantiation purposes..
