A lot of writers are on an emotional plane that is a lot higher than your Average Joe, which is essentially why they are "writers". And I wouldn't say just writers, but individuals who operate on an artistic level as such field requires an individual to express their utmost emotion (be it they're artists, philosophers, musicians, poets or authors), unlike fields such as Mathematics where there is no emotion or individuality posited in the result whatsoever.. . And even more surprisingly, although I could be wrong in my observation, is that writers from an early age tend to be "socially excluded". As children they don't "fit into the rest" easily, and tend to remain isolated. I think that has some sort of impact in the suicide of the writer. The belief that no one knows how you feel but yourself is a rather overwhelming one, and is one that many artists (of respective fields) try and illustrate through their works of art but almost always fail at.

if you trust the estate agent then use him, but if you dont trust him, or know much about him, then you should find a landlord directly. since you are going to nyc, most of your landlords will not be american. this is a very international city. for example, alot of indians rent to other indians. hispanics to other hispanics. you should be careful with estate agents because alot of them will lie to you just to get the comision. they are salesmen, just like any other salesmen. they make a living off comision. i would say you should have a chat with the agents before actually making a decision. personally, i prefer dealing with the landlord directly, but they dont advertise in the same way that agents do. have a look around craigs list. a big estate agent in nyc is century 21. did you have a part of nyc in mind? each part is quite different. manhattan is very different from all the other parts of nyc. manhattan is also very picky. i have heard of people having to pay the full 6 months rent in advance because they couldnt prove their income. that is like $12 000. a lot of money. some peoples yearly income. if you are studying in midtown, i would suggest jersey city. if you are studying uptown (ie colombia uni) then live in the bronx. if you are studying downtown (ie nyu), then live in brooklyn. jersey city has the best prices. if you are rich, then you can live in manhattan, but be prepared to fork over $2000 a month.

In terms of development, democracy is a good template for other systems to emulate. However, there is still a requirement to follow a strong, flexible Constitution that is designed with preservation of the rights of sentient beings in mind. Abrogation or abridgement of those fundamental rights is not conducive to good government of any sort, and does not serve the interests of democracy. Always remember one of the basic tenets of the Declaration of Independence: consent of the governed...
