First you have to enable the developer tab in Word 2007. To do this click the logo and select Word Options. Under "Popular" click on the box beside "Show the Developer Tab in the Ribbon". Click on OK at the bottom.. . Go to where you want to add a name. Select the Developer tab. See the 2nd group of icon called "Controls"? Select the icon that looks like a hammer and a wrench infront of a file folder. See the icons under Legacy Forms? These are the tools that you need to create forms.. . Now, here's some info on the tools available to you in the Legacy Forms toolbar. From left to right: The "ab" icon lets you add text to a form. The checkbox lets you add a checkbox to a form. The next icon is the Drop Down Form Field. This lets you add a drop down menu. Don't worry about the last three icons - you don't need them.. . Now, if you want to add text (such as a name) click on the "ab" icon. A grey box appears (it doesn't appear when the document is printed). The default is set for text that is unlimited number of characters (which is what you most likely want). But you can change this by right clicking on the grey box and selecting "Properties". You can see all the options in the drop down menu. Select what you want. If you want "default text" to appear in the document (such as your name) you can type that in the default text box. You can change the length of the entry if you wish. If you set it to 3 and you try to type a 4-letter word in it only the first three letters will appear. (I usually leave this as unlimited). You can change the format from lowercase to uppercase, to title case or First capital (sentence case). You can add formatting to the box itself (such as bold, underlining, colored text, etc.). Don't worry about the other settings - they are for very advanced users.. . If you need a checkbox, you would click on the checkbox icon (again you can right click and select properties). The only setting you need to worry about here is the "Default value" - if you want the box unchecked (the default) you don't need to change anything. If you want it checked, click on the button beside "checked". Click on OK.. . The drop down list is really cool. Let's say you work in an office with 5 employees and you are creating a memo template. You can make a drop down list. Click on the drop down icon. Right click on the grey box that pops up and select properties. Type in the first employee's name in the drop down item box and click on the Add button. Type in the next name and click on the Add button. Once all names are typed click OK. (If you make a mistake, highlight the name and click on the Remove button). Again, don't worry about the other features.. . Now if you want to enter a date you would click on the "ab" icon. Select the grey box and right click it and select Properties. Where it says "Type" select date from the drop down button. You can select the date format by clicking the drop down button in that Date Format box. Again select OK when you are done.. . You are almost finished. Once you have the form looking the way you want it, you need to protect the form in order for it to work. To do this select the "Protect Document" button (still under the Developer tab but the second from the right). A "Restrict formatting and editing" box will appear on the right hand side. Where it says "2. Editing restrictions" click on the box beside "Allow only this type of editing...". Click on the drop down button and select "Filling In Forms" and then click on the button that says "Yes, start enforcing protection".. . It will ask you if you want to set up a password (I never do as my coworkers wouldn't have a clue how to edit the document anyway). Click on OK.. . If you need to edit the document after it is protected just go back into the Developer tab and select Protect Document and then click on the Stop Protection button (in the Restrict Formatting and Editing window).. .
