no, not difficult. typically you file an application with the clerk of the probate court perhaps under your state's state statute governing name change. You will be required to pay a filing fee unless you are a pauper then you might be capable of submitting an application for leave to proceed in forma pauperis (poor) without payment of fees. You would also request that publication be made or arranged on your behalf due to your pauper status if the court granted that status. Otherwise, you pay the fee-maybe 35 bucks or something, and you also publish notice in a paper of general circulation in the community that you are requesting a change of name. You do all that crap and get a hearing scheduled on your application before the judge. During the hearing the court will determine whether you complied with the requirements (notice/publication, the reason for the change, the name sought). You can't change your name to avoid apprehension for a crime. You should maintain a record of all documents relating to this issue if you are granted a change of name. You should also research whether you have a common right under your state's common law doctrines to change your name without legal proceedings. My state previously had a common law to that effect but it was abolished in 1992. Once your name is changed you should apply for new identification (driver's license, credit cards, student ID). As far as your social security number goes, you can apply for a new card with your new name. YOu should continue to keep your old card because in the event you need to use your social security number for identification and the names don't match you can produce the old card, the order changing your name, the new card. After that you are set to live a life in obscurity as a wild jet-setter bent on life in the fast lane. Just make sure you bring me along for the trip. You can also, if you are into this type of "paper tripping" go to another state and set up there to satisfy the residency requirements, and change your name again and get new id as well. Tracing you will be a little more hard now. If you are blacklisted or subject to identity fraud you could also apply for another social sercurity number. Whether the social security admin approves is another story. good luck
