There are plenty of resignation letter templates online if you do a search. I provided one below. . As for being polite, 2 weeks notice is the standard. Giving longer notice will not serve you well unless you are absolutely essential to your company's ongoing operation, because managers don't want others a) following your example or b) listening to you if you have job-related reasons for leaving. You should also be prepared for them to tell you that if you leave, you leave immediately, because that may be their policy (for reasons I stated above), or because they take it very personally when an employee rejects them by quitting. Each situation is a little different. . When you submit your resignation letter, be very polite and warm and tell them how much you've enjoyed working there. Don't feel compelled to provide much detail or say how much you learned or what you plan to do after you quit, because that may make them feel like they were a stepping stone (which all jobs are) or just a way to make money for things you'd rather be doing. If there is a manager who you get along very well with (or two), repeat to them how much you enjoyed working with them and ask if you can consider them a reference down the road. If they agree, get their title, phone number and personal email address. Also be sure to get the work contact info for your human resources manager, make a note of your start/end date, your start/end wage, and get the job description for your position. This will help you to describe your experience when you add this to your resume.. On a final note, two weeks notice is a courtesy. In most private-sector jobs, your employment contract is at-will, meaning that you can quit with zero days notice and you can be fired with zero days notice. If this company were to fire you, they would not extend two weeks notice, so do think of your considerate resignation as a courtesy, not something you owe them. Good luck and enjoy your summer.
