- Whose paying for your college? If it would be possible, find a college and get a dorm and a food plan so your set for a place to stay. You or your parents will pay a lot to put you through school but you will be guaranteed a place to live without rent. Most colleges have food plans to. Apply for scholarships and student loans, they help. This way if you don't like your room mate anymore, who cares? your not depending on them for anything, you have a place to stay.. . -I know this is a decision based on you and your friend but you said it yourself this is YOUR life and YOUR dream, sometimes bringing friends into this is just gonna make the situation messy. Its hard relying on a friend to split rent money, and food money. Now I know you probably wont ditch her but I'm telling you now things change as the future goes on. You should consider talking to your parents and concentrating on YOU making it in NY and your parents helping you out, not a friend. Your parents wont ever leave you on the street, but a friend, no matter what they say, has no promises.. . -Consider starting in a smaller med school where you are. You can always transfer to NY as years go on. Save more money maybe have your parents save some too to help you out. Med school takes years to complete, spending 2 or 4 more years in Indiana wont be a big deal. New York does have great schools but you have to make sure you can afford to live there.. . On a final note, in my opinion. No, I don't think you will be able to do it. I think going into this with friends is a very bad idea, I'm not doubting your friendship but friendships change, they come and go. It would be very unfortunate for you to get into this great school in NY, you get your apartment together, everything's fine and dandy at first but then things don't work out between you two and you have to go home in the middle of the year because you have no money. I don't think your thinking this through and you don't realize that you are MILES away from home with no one to even stay with if you run into a problem. Although your adult out of high school a home, money, and nice paying job won't fall into your lap. Living on your own at 18 is very difficult, straight out of high school, attending college, just getting into the adult world is difficult enough. When kids go away to college they're staying at their college (using loans, scholarships and of course money they've saved) so they don't worry about rent. Thats how they go away. By moving to NY your putting expenses on yourself that I guarantee will be too overwhelming. You need a well paying job to, even with 2 people.. I recommend staying home and attending a decent med school there, save more money and transfer when you can afford a dorm at the school of your choice in NY. Or if you MUST leave after high school (which i doubt) then apply for scholarships and student loans and get your parents to help you out with a dorm. . Please, don't go to NY right after high school, you don't know what your getting yourself into and your gonna put yourself into a hole before turning 20. You got a great dream, concentrate on making it on your own BY YOURSELF.
