Youre succumbing to presentism. You are looking at past events out of context, and applying what you have absorbed in a lifetime spent as a modern American.. . The Revolutionary War produced thirteen independent little nation-states here in North America. A few years after the war they felt the need for some better coordination of efforts in a central government, to do things like make treaties with other nations, conduct a common defense, and deliver the mail. The leaders of those days were very afraid of a strong central government, such as the one they had just fought an eight year long war to rid themselves of. So when they sent delegates to Philadelphia and wrote the Constitution we still purportedly use today, it established a LIMITED central government, with only certain SPECIFIED powers, and no more than those powers. In order to get the little nation-states to go along, they had to add a Bill of Rights. The 9th and 10th Amendments spell this notion out explicitly. The 10 Amendment says that powers not specifically given to the Federal government by the Constitution are reserved to the states. Nothing was said about the Constitution being permanent, and nothing was said about never being able to get out of it once you were in it. The Constitution says nothing on states departing the Union, because everyone who took part in writing it understood that OF COURSE you could leave the Union if the people in your state wanted to do so. It took the consent of the states to adopt the Constitution and join the Union, and everyone understood that the reverse applied as well.. . Jefferson often spoke of the possibility of secession. He would say that we would remain cousins, if not brothers. During Washington's second term the New England states wanted to secede, but the scheme fell apart because they could not get New York to go along. During the War of 1812 the New England states again wanted to secede, going so far as to call a convention to discuss the prospects. By the time the Hartford Convention met in 1815 the war was over, so the idea was dropped. There were several different schemes among the new states west of the Appalachians to secede and perhaps join with the Spanish, so they could use the Mississippi. In short, secession was far from a new idea before the Confederate states carried through with the notion.. . Lincoln's own Attorney General told him there was no Constitutional basis for resorting to force to prevent states from departing the Union if they wanted to go.. . Lincoln was the real revolutionary. He ignored the Constitution out of his desire to "preserve the union". The war this produced transformed the US from a "Union" of about thirty-two states by that time into one "nation", and set us on the path to a huge, bloated, inefficient and greedy, dominating central government we all enjoy so much today.. . People are stupid about the Rebel flag because they are stupid in general. At best they are ignorant.
