The answer is - it depends on what you are trying to achieve by registering a business name. Do you intend to sell the application or services associated with it? You can open a corporation (to legally separate your personal assets from company's), you can form a sole proprietorship - any which way you like it. Point is - if you just want to distribute the source code - you don't need a business, if you want to make money out of it - you can register a business, but you have to be careful about which legal entity it would be.

I started a business earlier this year and now that I am better organized I would like to change my business' name. I have alreay filed my business as a registered business in Ohio. All you have to do is look around and see the benefits, my health care is better and cheaper , I think it's well worth it and, like fine wine, will get better with age.. I like it alot!.
