I would think very carefully about it, and what should be stated in the POA. Do you want him to receive the money directly on your behalf from the sale of land. What if he pockets some under the table? Yes,it does happen more often then you know!!. . I would give him specific powers only in the form of a SPECIAL POWER OF ATTORNEY, rather than a GENERAL POWER OF ATTORNEY, and state clearly that you need to be informed (before any final decisions are made) in writing, so that there are no problems in the future.. . If you agree to give him Power of Attorney, I would write out exactly what powers you are giving him and what level, send him a draft copy that he can get a final version made on Indian stamp paper, I think it's a RS 100 stamp paper, through a lawyer in India, then have him send it to you. I would strongly suggest you review it with a local lawyer and understand fully its implications before you sign it, you can then sign it in front of a notary if you are in full agreement of how it reads. Make a copy for yourself, and then send original to your father-in-law for his use and safe-keeping.. . All kinds of land fraud takes place on basis of POA in India. Be extremely careful, because if it does occur in your case and you decide to take legal action, then it will take several years before you get a resolution of any kind depending on circumstances. Relatives can conduct the worst kind of fraud in India.. . Samples of POAs are available on the web, just google sample Power of Attorney.
