A: Typically most real estate agents work for a real estate broker. The broker in most cases is the owner of an independent office or franchised firm. The majority of agents work as independent contractors and not as employees of the office. This means that there is limited costs for the broker to bring you on as an agent so as long as you have an active license in the state that you are living in, it shouldn't be hard to find work.. Q: What pay should i expect?. A: Typically an agents income is limited only by the number of transactions that they close. The more you sell the more you make! The amount that you make on each deal will vary as well as the amount of commission that you earn. You can also expect that you will have to then pay your broker a portion of your commission as well. The brokers cut will vary from office to office and you should ask the broker what percentage you will pay to the office. In most cases commissions are normally paid by the seller of the property, % based, and normally set by the seller and are normally split between the selling agent and the buying agent.. Scenario: You represent the buyer, $250,000 home, 6% Commission to be split 50/50 between agents, and your broker split is 70/30.
