Ed Richards advises and represents clients on a variety of complex labor management relations issues and employment litigation matters, including litigation in both federal and state courts and in administrative proceedings before federal and state administrative agencies. A significant portion of his practice is devoted to counseling and representing clients in unfair labor practice proceedings, arbitration proceedings, union organizing, collective bargaining, decertification proceedings, corporate campaigns, work stoppages, and other issues arising under the NLRA. He also represents clients in employment litigation matters, including cases brought pursuant to the FLSA, ERISA, the ADEA, and the ADA. Additionally, Ed frequently represents clients in connection with labor and employment issues arising in mergers and acquisitions and other business transactions.
Recently, Ed represented a leading Great Lakes shipping company in connection with an ongoing economic strike. On behalf of the client, he persuaded two different NLRB regions that the union's strike misconduct violated the NLRA, resulting in multiple NLRB complaints and settlement agreements. Ed also recently worked on a Jones Day team representing a leading tire manufacturer in an arbitration case resulting in the dismissal of a union grievance seeking $40 million in allegedly unpaid plant closure benefits.
Ed has an active pro bono practice, including the successful representation of a 41 U.S.C.? 1983 plaintiff and providing labor and employment guidance to a Chicago community organization that provides services to the developmentally disabled.
