My parents recently left to spend two months in Massachusetts with family, and asked that my husband and I periodically check in to make sure everything was being taken care of. Two weeks after they left, the houseguest hadn't mowed the property, the fence had not been worked on at all, and he was improperly feeding the animals to where we had to call a vet out for one of the older horses. The last straw came on Tuesday when the houseguest took off for 48 hours without notifying us so we could arrange to come over and take care of the animals. The neighbor was the one who called me, concerned that she hadn't seen our houseguest in two days and that the horses were not out in the pasture, as they were supposed to be. When we got to the property, we found all the horses locked up in the barn with the barn doors shut, no water or hay at all. Might I add, we live in Texas and it's been about 100 degrees every day for the past few weeks. I notified my parents of the situation, and they asked me to escort the houseguest off of the property upon his return and take his keys/gate opener. So, I did. I packed up his clothing and toiletries for him, and he said he would be back Saturday to pick up the remaining personal items that he had no place for. I agreed. (He left behind his Xbox, computer, Sony PSP, paintball guns and a non-functioning motorcycle.). . He did not show up, nor did he call to make arrangements to pick up his things. He did, however, email me via Facebook this morning and ask if I would hold his property until Tuesday because he had no place to put it (he's apparently crashing on a friend's couch).. . I told him I'd hold it until Tuesday. My question is this: if he doesn't collect his property on Tuesday, can I give him notice of intent to end bailment? Also, he owes my mother money for car repairs, can I put a lien against his personal items until he repays my mother what he owes her? I don't want to keep his crap, but I want my mother to be repaid for the money she loaned him, and I don't want to be required to store his property until he feels like showing up to get it..
