I work in a medical clinic in a small town. The local Telecommunications co-op is asking us to renew a 5 year service agreement to renew our services for phone, fax and internet. The long distance service costs us an arm and a leg because everywhere we need to call is long distance. So I have been thinking of going with a VOIP system that a reputable company in the neighboring town is offering. 5 years seems a bit long for any service agreement anywhere else I have been, and the local Telephone Co-op is a bit behind in technology as in comparison to other phone companies I have had service with personally. I wonder if anyone else has come across any utility wanting a 5 year service agreement, and what was their reasoning for such a long agreement?.

A good example would be the basis of politics or religion, or really anything that takes a personal interest that has bearing on real life. Logically we can look at certain things and say "this doesn't make sense, I don't believe it", but then there are often times where we will excuse away inconsistencies or logical holes in our arguments because we want to believe in this specific thing.. . Christians, for instance, often try to 'explain' the miracles of God and the different things detailed in the Bible to try to convert others into Christianity. This is an example of reason being a slave to passion because (by Christian standards) the Bible cannot be logically explained, that is the point of a miracle and the basis of faith. It is a supernatural phenomena that doesn't fall into teh same laws of physics and rationality as our world. You either accept it as your faith, or you don't. There's no way to logically explain how Jesus died and came back from the dead after three days, so attempting it is just showing that you're letting your passion lead you as opposed to your logic. On the other side of the same coin, atheists and the like will argue that there is no god or deity, and after we die there is nothing. This is also illogical because there is no solid evidence against the Creationist point of view, nor is there any proof that an after-life doesn't exist. Religion itself is a bit passion-over-reason, because it is based on faith and not solid evidence.. . In politics, people might argue that their party or elected official is always right because that is who they have akin themselves to, and that is who they support politically. This begins to be an example of reason enslaved by passion because people can fool themselves into falling for whatever a certain person or party says, even if it really goes against the main principles or ideals that are attributed to that party or person. Once you set your heart in something so deeply that you cannot see anything but what you have set your heart on, your reason will be slanted towards that particular thing.. . Any instance where logic and thought are being hindered by personal bias or preference would be an example of that theory.

The only way you can get it changed would be to contact probate court for a legal name change.. . It is not uncommon for people to use their middle name instead of their first. Let's say that your name is David Steven Brown and you go by Steven. A proper way of signing your name would be "D. Steven Brown" and social security would accept your changing the name on your card that way without a legal name change to do it (and if the account number clerk won't do it then ask to speak to a supervisor - after all it IS your name). You should have documents showing the name both ways. Regardless of the fact that your parents switched the names around it isn't legal. D. Steven Brown is what your parents SHOULD have done if they didn't want to go through the hassle of having it changed legally.. . Whatever you do it should be consistent. And it DOES matter how it is shown on your social security card. IRS won't issue refunds to people whose names on their tax returns don't agree with their names on their social security cards and plenty of employers will insist upon using the name as shown on the social security card as well.
