Faith is believing and trusting in subjective experience and reports and that New Testament way of puttting it really isn't that bad however...the FOCUS of our faith in Judaism is so very different from the New Testament.. Christianity focuses primarily upon the afterlife and we often read in Yahoo how Christians claim they are separate from ?this world? and Christian doctrine tells them that focusing on the "world" implies some kind of predication to greed or selfishness. Sometimes that has been a prelude to the recitation of the nasty stereotype of Jews as selfish because we say Judaism is a world affirming faith. To equate life and world-affirming with selfishness or greed simply does not compute or fit with the Torah's notions of gratitude for our life and this world and its primary focus upon justice and mercy.. Jewish ethical precepts from the Torah focus on how we live and the gift of this life and our obligations to enjoy it, make the world a better place for ourselves and for the lives to follow ours.. Many of the ancient religions preceding Judaism focused more on fear of death and preparation for it. In the case of Egypt, the Israelites nearly lost their identity as a covenant nation people dedicated to one God and the purpose of living our covenant in gratitude for the gift of life and our obligations in it while immersed in a culture virtually obsessed with preparation for death often to the detriment of this life.. . Christianity focuses on teaching that one must accept on faith belief that Jesus death and blood "reconcile" a sinful nature (being born with a burden of sin is also foreign to Torah) and then awareness of God will change their behaviour and that it doesn?t really matter what they do but it is what they believe that will give them ?salvation. The Christian concept of salvation is foreign to Torah. Judaism teaches us that it is how we live and interact with one another that opens us up to the awareness and direct connection to the Divine. For many people, it appears to be a slow process of growth into awareness of our connection to God, rather than some kind of overwhelming revelatory moment. However, Judaism is unique in the religions of the world in that the direct encounter with God experienced by ALL Israel at Sinai is the only record of God revealing the Divine Presence to an entire nation at once.. Judaism is a path of LIVING and honoring this life God gave us and the lives that come after us while we build on the wisdom of those who came before us. The bonds of idolatry and superstition that enslaved the mind were broken when Israel came to the recognition that man/gods and animal gods were powerless over this life. It wasn't only deliverance from physical bondage that is told about at Passover, but the deliverance for each generation when we remember the kind of enslavement that happens when one is focusing on concern for another world than this one is made priority. . When Jews explain that Judaism is a world-affirming, not world-denying faith it means we are obligated to use the gifts and blessings we have in this world to make it better for ourselves, for our families and for the rest of the world as well as the lives to follow ours.. Judaism doesn't focus on what happens after we die. We trust God for that. Our covenant/obligation with God is about is how we LIVE.. The story of the Exodus from Egypt and Passover isn't just about the emancipation from physical slavery, but about the emancipation from the spiritual enslavement to idolatry and superstition immersed in a culture literally obsessed with the afterlife.. Torah = strict monotheism, focus of how to bring this world to justice, mercy and compassion for all life =The Book of Life. Egyptian incarnate deity/Pharaoh and polytheistic idolatry with focus upon the afterlife over concern for this life and obsession with preparation for death = The Book of the Dead. . Judaism is a world-affirming and life-affirming religion to its very core. The Torah reads in some manner as a replacement theology to the Book of the Dead in much the same way that the New Testament returns to a focus of the afterlife and reads as replacement theology to the Tanakh. The Torah led the Hebrews from a system of worship of more than one deity who was represented on earth in the form of Pharaoh as a incarnate god and whose religions focused more on the afterlife than this life, to a covenant of faith that is monotheistic in nature exclusive to an incorporeal Creator who declared to all Israel that God does not become a man and primarily focuses on life rather than death.
