Unfortunately, DPA and advanced directives are not very useful when someone is still conscious. Even if they are confused or disoriented, using a DPA or advanced directive is dubious at best.. . There are typically two types of legal statuses that might be helpful in most states. In California they are called conservatorships--one for probate, the other for mental health (Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, or LPS). A probate conservatorship requires a person have a recognized permanent condition that renders them unable to make legal decisions. It must be declared by a probate court, not a doctor, and it is usually petitioned for by a family member. The probate conservatorship gives the conservator the power over estate (property, contract-making, etc) as well as, more importantly, person. This includes health-care decision making, even if the person is still conscious. Typically, this is used for moderate to severe mental retardation, Alzheimer's dementia, vegetative states, etc. However, decisions about mental health treatment are excluded from the conservator's powers.. . The LPS conservatorship addresses this exception. An LPS conservatee (who is declared unable to care for their basic need because of a mental disorder) will have his LPS conservator make mental health decisions. Sometimes, the LPS conservator is given temporary or even permanent probate powers as well.. . These are the names in California. I don't know the equivalent in your state, but a probate lawyer or mental health lawyer could probably tell you. I don't know if your friend would qualify for either, but if you are concerned, it is at least worth looking into.

I would say that it depends on what level your career is at, and what position you are looking to move into.. . I think it can be very worthwhile if any of the following apply to you:. - You're very senior and therefore probably have too much experience to be able to condense it effectively (and if this applies then the cost isn't going to hurt either). - You're looking to move into a different field than what you've done in the past, and need help expressing how your past experience is relevant. - You've been in the same position for many years, or have been out of the workforce for several years, so haven't written a CV for a long time and don't know what current practice is. . It certainly isn't worthwhile if you work in low-skilled jobs, or if you're a graduate so you have very little experience to actually put on it.. . I would argue with those who say that there are templates online which mean that you can do it yourself. Yes, there are templates which will show you how to set it out, but this is irrelevant because a professional writer will do far more than just set it out nicely. They'll help you with the wording, and help you focus on what things to include and what things to leave out.. . I also think that if you get it done once and see how the professional does it, you probably won't need to go back - you'll just be able to edit it yourself from then on.
