so many words per line, so many lines per page, etc. Others will accept a digital file, but only in certain formats and such. You also need to be aware that most won't even accept unsolicited manuscripts, so sending in your story would be a waste of time and postage.. . You can look inside the various magazines and find the page that has the name and address of the publisher and the names of various officers and editors. There may be some information on how to send in your writing. Or, see if you can figure out which of those job titles seems to be the one most likely it is to read and sort through the manuscripts sent in. It might be a "story editor," of a "features editor," or submissions editor. Mabe you will only find an "editor-in-chief." Send them what is called a "query letter," in which you request their submission guidlines. Send the letter along with a Self Addresed, Stamped Envelop (SASE). You are asking them a favor, so don't expect they will do you that favor by spending their own postage money.. . You will, either get back a letter stating their thanks for your interest, but that they don't accept unsolicited submissions, or, another form letter giving you their requirements for sending in your writing. It is VERY important that you read, understand and follow those guidlines. These "rules" are written with the intention of making it easy for them to go through the dozens, if not hundreds of mails they get each day. I can think of NOTHING that will get your story tossed in the waste can faster than a submission from someone who cannot follow simple directions. I have heard of publishers that won't even OPEN something that comes in the wrong size envelope.. . I also recommend you go to your local bookstore and find a copy of a book titled, "Writer's Market." This contains a list of hundreds of publishers who have been known to accept, at least, some unsolicited manuscripts. The book also list what many of these publisher like to see in the way of subject matter and style. For example, you would learn that it would be a waste of time to send in fictional stories of fluffy bunny families to a magazine aimed at an audience of hunters and fishermen. Or to send in an article about your latest family vacation trip to a magazine geared toward hot-rodders.. . Do your research and do some "target marketing." Send your queries and manuscripts to those places more likely to WANT to publish your work.. . Keep in mind that the nation is full of people who can write, but, there are only so many stories that can be published. Expect to get a lot of "Thank you, but we are not interested..." types of reject letters. Most will not even take the time to tell you WHY your particular story was not accepted. Publishers are not in the business of providing constructive criticism. Don't take the rejection personally. Just keep plugging away at it. If you are a good writer, your chances are better at being accepted at some point.. . Good luck.
