I just emailed the director of food service of my school regarding adding or altering the menu to accommodation a meat-free diet. Here is my letter:. . Dear Mrs. _________. . I will be a grade 12 student this year and I was wondering if there were going to be any changes to the lunch menu this upcoming year. I know we have had food organizations come in the past in order for us to sample food. I remember sampling a few things last year and I was told that they could be possible meal choices if enough people liked them. I am contacting you in order to express my concern for the menu regarding these changes. Also, there are a few people I have met at school, including me, that follow a vegetarian or an otherwise restricted diet for either religious, personal, or health reasons and I was wondering if anything was being done or would be considered in order to accommodate this. There are many healthy meat-free alternatives that can be added to the menu that both vegetarians and meat eaters can enjoy. Example of these include veggie burgers, cheese pizza, peanut butter and jelly, everyday salads without meat additions, bean burritos, and spaghetti made with a non-meat based with an option of adding meat balls to the side. I believe that, if added, these additions would not only leave students with more options, but would also give them more energy throughout the day that is needed to focus and learn during class and after school activities. I understand that the budget is limited, but even adding or altering one main dish would be a great improvement. There are also websites out there that help school cafeterias with adding meat-free additions. If there is any way I can help out, feel free to contact me via email. Not alot of people here are open to the idea of vegetarianism it seems. That's great you have cheese pizza at least. We only have pepperoni, unfortunately. I usually try to get there fast, then suck it up and pick the meat off and get as much as the juice off as I can :/ I know it still leave trace amounts, but it's the best I can do without eating salads (that contain meat most the time) or bringing my lunch everyday (which can get expensive). Of course, if you are even a bit hesitant (go to your locker or whatever before lunch or are on the on side of school), forget even having pizza.....
