But you can't just put some random name on your application, because the US Immigration Service will see all your documents: passport, birth certificate, etc.

The first thing you need to do is find a list of reputable agents. You can do this by getting a copy of The Writer's Market, as it lists agents by genre they specialise in, so you should be able to find some children's literature agents. Once you've found a few you like the look of, you need to write a query letter. You can find templates online, but a query letter is basically your opportunity to introduce yourself and your book, and explain why it would sell.. If an agent thinks you have publishable material, they will agree to take you on. But remember, there are a lot of scam artists out there posing as agents, so be savvy. If an "agent" asks you for any form of payment upfront, they're not legitimate. Agents, like you, don't see a dime until your book is in print.. Once you land yourself an agent, they'll do all the heavy lifting when it comes to pitching to different publishing houses. Of course you can cut out the middle man and go straight to the publisher yourself, but these days most publishing houses won't even read a manuscript that doesn't have the backing of an agent.. Since it's your first book, you need to remember that you're most likely going to face disappointment. No writer, ever, in the history of mankind, has gotten lucky on their first try. My older brother wants to sign Durable POA forms, and also Healthcare POA forms and give me rights to handle all his affairs while he's on the road for an extensive trip. He lives in Missouri and the forms we printed off the internet say State of Missouri. We have a friend who can meet us in the evenings and notarize his signature and provide the two witnesses to his signature, but she is a Kansas notary only. The forms we printed have State of Missouri, County of (blank) on the notary section, but she and I don't live in Missouri. We're confused if this will cause a problem with the papers being legal and binding. I've always handled all his finances and such when he's been gone on these long trips, we just want something binding if anything should happen to him. He has no wife or children..
