Writing a letter to the school is fine. Writing a letter to the editor of the local paper is fine.

I was born with the surname jones, thats the name that appears on my birth certificate. But around the age 11 my mum contacted a British solicitor asking to change it to her surname (wilson) as my father played no active role in my life (so why have his name). The solicitor gave us 3 letters to hand out to people saying i should now be called Wilson, not Jones. Now though i'm in my 30's and while all my paperwork is in the name Wilson i wonder if its actually official. My mother kept none of the letters stating the name change and my bank account is only in my name Wilson as a lady at the bank was kind enough to trust me, that bank account was enough to prove to other people i was in fact Wilson. I'm planning on getting married soon and getting a passport, but what is my actual surname, i have no proof of the name change, so wonder am i still Jones or am i officially wilson (and what can i send to the passport company to prove this). . If i am still Jones how do i go about changing it officially, without it costing a fortune.. Thanks in advance.

Take photos of the apartment before it gets any later. You will need them to prove no damages when you move out. Make sure they have a date on them. Not on your phone. Regular printed photos are better for court. You should do your own checklist of things that were wrong. You must speak with the landlord and tell her you did not break the thermostat and furthermore, it was not your request that it be replaced. The maintenance man made that decision. Dont pay the bill. That is something the landlord must pay for. Not every landlord gives a checklist of things that are missing or broken when you move in. You must write down everything. A checklist is not a legal document and does not become invisible after 30 days. You can keep a log of everything that goes wrong. Landlord is responsible to repair everything unless you break something. If there is anything in your lease concerning repairs, and you signed the lease, you go by that.

Obviously I'm biased, but do what your gut says. The most important thing is that you are completely satisfied with your choice at the end of the day.
