The process to legally change your name takes six to eight weeks and costs $137. There is no way to change your name without paying the fee. If you don't like the inconvenience, then don't change your name.
Real Estate trust question
Believe me, attorneys take it VERY seriously when there is a fee dispute and the state bar gets involved. In fact, most attorneys are more than happy to sit down and discuss the issue with you and try to work it out. After all, if you aren't happy with them, that only increases the chance that they can kiss goodbye any repeat or referral business, not to mention that no attorney wants to get sued by a former client.. . So get a copy of your retainer agreement and give your attorney a call to discuss the charges.
Keep all letter and record any phone calls you make. Send letters by certified mail so you have proof you sent them. DO NOT be afraid to threaten lawsuits if they do not comply. I've helped several people fix problems, plus cleaned up my open report from a lot of wrong information and ID Theft. The threat of a lawsuit is the only thing these guys seem to understand.
You CAN change your name on your birth certificate if the court order specifically states that dept. of vital statistics amend "your old name" to "your new name". If it only orders your name changed and there is not a specific order to amend the birth certificate, then you can not. Also the order can be written two ways: One will have a line through old name and show new name on birth certificate, the other will erase old name entirely and add new name on birth certificate.. . If you do not want to amend your birth certificate, no matter what your order shows you do not have to. If you ever need to use your birth certificate for any reason, like DMV, you would also need a copy of the court ordered name change to prove you are one in the same person.
