    Here is how it works for those who die while on active duty:. . - a Casualty Notification Team (CNT), usually consisting of an Officer and NCO, go to the residence listed as for the Primary Next of Kin (which is never a 'girlfriend' as another answered). If the CNT is from the unit of the deceased, they usually grab the unit Chaplain as well. The CNT is solely there to make the notification, offer whatever immediate support is needed, and leave instructions about what will happen next and any essential points of contact. They are essentially there to both notify and be the 'bad news guy' in the eyes of the next-of-kin.. . - within 72 hours, a Casualty Assistance Officer (CAO) shows up and assists the next-of-kin with all they need, to include bringing the death gratuity check, and assistance dealing with the funeral home, press, benefits, etc. The CAO assists the family as long as they need it. The CAO is always different from the anyone on the CNT so that the CAO is not tainted with having been the guy bringing bad news.. . - the Soldier's unit will also appoint a Summary Court Martial Officer (SCMO) who handles taking care of the deceased's affairs at the unit. The SCMO will also interact with the next-of-kin to ensure that the Soldier's personal effects and finances are taken care of.. . There are more detailed items for all elements, but I think you get the picture.. . This is done no matter if the Soldier was killed in action, or got run over going to PT in the morning, suicide included.
