My main observation centers around the trivial matter of nomenclature - I wish someone would have come up with a separate name for the legal unions that are non-traditional so as to leave the words marriage, husband and wife as they have usually been. I don't accept any of the religion-based arguments against it because this is a civil legal matter. If different churches and "whatever"s don't wish to recognize the unions then that's their business too. I wonder how much less opposition to "gay marriage" would exist if it had a separate name but equivalent legal status.. . My three reasons:. . 1) A couple should have proper legal and financial protection regardless of gender combination for purposes of estate planning and things like medical authority for each other in emergency situations. It's not right to treat an actual life partner as an unrelated "friend" in hospital emergencies.. . 2) Gay couples should have all the same legal burdens and obligations as any other couples.. . 3) A civil contract should not require the parties to be of a certain combination of genders in order to be legal. Marriage is a parallel cultural and sometimes religious construct which is being muddled with the legal/civic contract which goes alongside of marriage but is not the same thing, in my opinion. I've witnessed relatives say religious vows in church and be declared man & wife by their Pastor and then they went off into a side chamber to sign the legal documents to complete the legal side of the contract. The fact that the Pastor is legally authorized to act as a legal officer to administer the signing of the civil contract does not mean the two aspects are the same thing - they are parallel ideas, one religious and the other civil.. . So I support the idea and reality of gay unions but I regard the religious/cultural nature of marriage to be a distinct and separable idea even though I am not at all religious myself. Unfortunately perhaps, we live in a culture where the idea of "equality" as a precise and exact mathematical principle has now totally displaced the actual concept of "fairness" which is what we should be debating most of the time. We do not always need to be equal in order to be fair. We don't need "male ballerinas" in tutus or "female Defensive Ends" playing for the Chicago Bears in order to have a fair world.
