• Jim grew up in Fairbanks and has practiced law in Alaska since graduating in 1975 from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois. Jim has worked at Guess & Rudd since 1986. He is the co-author of the Volunteer Legal Handbook through nine editions and for fifteen years chaired the faculty of the Biennial Nonprofit Law courses sponsored by the Alaska Bar Association. He was a member of the board of directors of United Way of the Tanana Valley for more than twenty years, and was its president in 1993. He is an avid birder and bird photographer. Jim is married to environmental consultant Nancy DeWitt, the former executive director of the Alaska Bird Observatory.

There were two kinds of marriage licence that could be issued: the usual was known as a common licence and named one or two parishes where the wedding could take place, within the jurisdiction of the person who issued the licence. Harwicke's Marriage Act 1753 affirmed this existing ecclesiastical law and built it into statutory law. From this date, a marriage was only legally valid if it followed the calling of banns in church, or the obtaining of a licence?the only exceptions being Jewish and Quaker marriages, whose legality was also recognised.. . Since 1837, civil marriages have been a legal alternative to church marriages so, today, a couple has a choice between being married in the Anglican Church, after the calling of banns or obtaining a licence, or else they can give "Notice of Marriage" to a civil registrar. In this latter case, the notice is publicly posted for 15 days, after which a civil marriage can take place.. . How does a power of attorney work?

I know they're out there, but I can't find them and I need one before it's too late. This disease hit my mother-in-law so suddenly and the papers were never drawn up before. Can anyone direct me to an absolutely free, legal form or template we can download for a Durable Power of Attorney? Not a Durable POA for Healthcare, we already have that. We have a living will, we have an advance directive, what we need is papers giving the POA the right to handle property and financial matters. We are in Pennsylvania. Thanks for any help..

In my training in customer service we were told NEVER to APOLOGIZE .. but rather to THANK them. So don't do the "sorry for..." line... rather to THANK them for their understanding, patience, cooperation, etc. It sits better. I do this all the time when I'm taking pizza orders at my 2nd job. If there's been some mix up, or a long time to wait for the computer, or a product is unavailable, instead of saying "I'm sorry..." I say, "Thank you for your patience..." or whatever. They usually take it a whole lot better, too.. . The closing I use in business letters is "Yours truly." It covers all bases... and you don't have to worry about being "sincere.".
