• Patrick S. DeMoon III is an associate of Godfrey, Leibsle, Blackbourn & Howarth, S.C. Patrick earned his law degree from the DePaul University's College of Law in 1996. He began his legal career when he accepted an appointment as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois. Over the next five years, Patrick represented the state and its elected officials as the lead attorney on a number of high profile cases, several of which were featured on television and the front pages of Chicago area newspapers. Make sure you have a medical power of attorney for your mother, and a financial one as well if you believe that may be necessary. These can be done with conditions like 'if I am in the hospital for 10 days or more'. Make sure her bank has a copy of this, and of your signature on a card in the power of attorney format: "Daughter Jones for Mother Jones". Have a full list of her monthly bills and obligations, and their due dates, the date of her lease renewal and insurance renewals... all that. Be sure you can get her paper delivery stopped, and her mail picked up somehow. That way if you have to manage these things from afar, it is at least possible. Also make sure you know how to contact her friends, in case her cat may need feeding,.. Or for when you must arrange her funeral. Make sure she has a valid will.. . All of this seems morbid and worst case, but it is not! When I realized I needed these things in regard to my mother, I just plain arranged all of this and gave it to my children. I keep them updated with sources of occassional chore labor, like the local flex school, where children are required to do community service, and the local mail collection services, all that.. . Now when my mother is in the hospital, her rent gets paid, her paper does not Build up on the porch, and her cat is well. She knows this, I can report it to her on the phone! Her doctor knows he can speak freely with me, and that if she is very poorly, or heavily drugged, I can legally make decisions for her. I can know her wished because she has laid them out for me. I know her insurance information. Insured people get better care (sad but true).. . If she is wobbly, see that she has a bar in the shower, a higher toilet seat, and if she is *really* wobbly, an emergency call beeper she can wear.. . Care does not have to be in person, and no one wants to limit their child's life. Do what is prudent to prepare for your longer distance relationship, and then GO! :)

Much of the free jazz I've heard uses very obtuse forms, or no form at all, and so offers very little contextual information for the listener (or the players). The players are aiming for a general sonority by choosing certain scales or combinations of scales, or certain rhythms or combinations of rhythms. Coltrane's sheets of sound were achieved by playing scales at blazing fast speeds, so that the listener didn't hear individual random notes, but rather a series of cascading tonalities. His choices certainly weren't random, although I think it would be extremely difficult to organize them in a meaningful theoretical way. He aimed for (and achieved) very raw, very visceral moods and emotions!

However, many states that offer some form of same-sex legal relationship recognition offer some form of reciprocity. For example, in NJ (where civil unions are legal) they will recognize a MA or CA same-sex marriage as a civil union, and they will also recognize a Vermont civil union. However, a gay marriage will only be officially "legal" in the state where it was made, due to DOMA. It will be interesting to see how California and Massachusetts handle same-sex marriage licenses from each other, but I would bet that a gay couple married in CA would also be considered married in MA, and vice versa.
