lawyer Henderson, Clark H. Reviews

I have used typewriters, dedicated word processing systems, and general-purpose computers. I think each was a huge improvement over the previous one.. . I had trouble learning to write as a kid. I finally got so I could do block-letters, and then they insisted I learn script, and that just screwed me up royally. So when I was 14, Sears came out with a portable electric typewriter, and my parents bought me one, and it really changed my life! It took me only about three weeks to learn to type faster than I could write, and a lot clearer. (This was in the early 1960s, way before computers).. . I took typing in the 8th grade, and it was taught on 'upright' manual typewriters without letters on the keys (to keep us from looking at the keys). It's almost impossible to type faster than about 30 wpm on one of those. It's all about building up strength in your fingers, almost like some kind of bizarre martial art. Even modern typewriters are slower than a computer because the typewriter takes some finite amount of time to strike the character after you hit the key. You get into a rhythm, keeping up with the machine, rather than just hit characters in groups as you do on a computer. Someone who learns to type on a computer keyboard, when they use a typewriter it takes them some time to slow down and work in concert with the typewriter.. . Dedicated word processing systems, made by Wang, Lanier, SCM, etc. made typing much faster. It allowed correction by backspacing, which was a HUGE advantage. That one thing made it worthwhile. But it also allowed saving 'templates' and standard letters, like form letters, doing mailing lists, stuff like that. The bad effect it had was that before dedicated WP systems, most secretaries and clerks did some typing, but afterwards there was a 'typing pool' of ladies (all ladies) who did nothing but typing. Where I worked in the 1970s, you could pick up a phone anywhere in the building, dial an extension, and dictate a letter or other document. The Word Processing Pool was in the basement, unseen, so the document just 'magically' showed up in your in-box the next day.. . The first dedicated WP systems didn't use disks, they used paper tape. You'd type a line, and you'd see it on paper, and you could backspace and make corrections, and then when you hit 'return' the paper tape punch would spit out about six inches of tape. When you were finished with your document, you'd load a sheet of paper in another similar machine and run the paper tape through it and it would 'magically' retype your document. And everyone in the office would drop what they were doing and come stand around and watch it. 8^). . Nowadays everyone has a computer on his desk, so everyone does his own typing, which at least spreads the work around. But the computer has also eliminated a number of other specialties, like drafting. It used to be an engineer would do a sketch and hand it off to a draftsman to make a good drawing. Now the engineer does the drawing himself, and it's not as good as a real draftsman would do! And we can't go back, because there -are- no draftsmen anymore.. . Also, as technology advances, the
