It actually depends on the state you live in as to the process you have to go through. When I got divorced my attorney screwed up and forgot to put that I wanted to return to my maiden name in the paperwork so the judge had it hand-written in. When I got my certified copy (you have to have a certified copy) the hand-written part was there but when I went to change my name on my drivers license, they refused because it wasn't typed like everything else so I was stuck. You have to show proof that you chose to go back to maiden name - it HAS to be in the court papers - it HAS to be a certified copy. Then take to your DMV (or whatever your state calls it) and ask to change it on your driver's license - it may cost the same as if you were getting your renewal but worth it. You have to go to Social Security or print the form from online and send the paperwork in. You will have to show or send your certified copy of your divorce decree to get it changed (just like you have to show proof/certified copy of getting married to change to married name). As long as the court papers allow for the change, you can change these things. Once the drivers' license and social security is taken care of, you have to make sure you have your name changed at work, on credit cards, bank statements, utilities/leases/mortgage...don't leave a single thing in your married name. You may have to do some things in person (like utilities and bank statements) because almost all need to see the certified copy - but employer should not be a problem but don't change with them until after you get your license and soc security changed or you will have problems cashing paychecks and such. Takes time, but in a matter of months all should be taken care of.
