  1.ASBESTOS: WHAT IS IT?

  Asbestos is the name given to a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of fibers, which can be separated into thin threads and woven. There are four main types of asbestos: Chrysotile, Amosite, Crocidolite and Anthophylite. Because these fibers are not affected by heat or chemicals and because they do not conduct electricity, asbestos was widely used in many industries. The fiber masses have a tendency to break easily into a dust of tiny particles that can float in the air, stick to clothes, and may be easily inhaled or swallowed.

  2.HOW WAS ASBESTOS USED?

  Asbestos was mined and used commercially in North America from 1880, but its use increased greatly during World War II. Asbestos was used in many industries during the past four decades. For example, the building and construction industry used asbestos for strengthening cement and plastics as well as for heat insulation, fireproofing and sound absorption. The shipbuilding industry used asbestos to insulate boilers, steampipes, hot water pipes, and nuclear reactors in ships. Because of its good friction and war characteristics, asbestos was a component of the brakeshoes and clutchpads of cars and trucks. It is estimated that patents have been issued for more than 5,000 different asbestos-containing products. The following list includes some of the types of products that have contained asbestos: pipe insulation, block insulation, refractory cements, insulation cements, cement sheets, millboard, wallboard, drywall compounds, plaster, cement pipe, roofing products, wall and attic insulation, floor tile, ceiling tile, gaskets, packing, caulking, asbestos cloth, and heat resistant clothing.

  3.WHAT ARE THE HEALTH HAZARDS OF EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS?

  Exposure to asbestos may increase the risk of these serious diseases:Pleural Plaques or Pleural Thickening:a thickening or scarring of the lining around the lungs called the pleura.Asbestosis:a chronic lung ailment that can produce shortness of breath, permanent lung scarring and increased risk of dangerous lung infections.Lung CancerOther Cancers:cancer of the throat, esophagus, stomach or colon.Mesothelioma:a relatively rare cancer of the thin membranes lining the chest and abdomen.While all types of asbestos fibers may increase the risk of developing these diseases, some scientists believe that crocidolite and amosite are more likely to produce mesothelioma than is chrysotile. However, because most workers have been exposed to a variety of asbestos fiber types during their lifetime, it has not yet been possible to confirm this finding.

  4.WHO IS AT RISK?

  Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos dust, including many of the 4.5 million men and women who worked in shipyards during the peak shipbuilding years of World War II. Health hazards from asbestos dust have been recognized among workers exposed in shipbuilding trades, asbestos mining, asbestos manufacturing, insulation work in the construction and building trades, refinery workers, steelworkers, automotive brake repair and a variety of other trades. Demolition workers and drywall removers also may have been heavily exposed to asbestos dust. As a result of Government regulations and improved work practices, current workers (those without previous experience) can expect to face smaller risks than those exposed in the past.

  Even workers who may not have worked directly with asbestos, but whose jobs were located near contaminated areas, have developed pleural disease, asbestosis, lung cancer, other cancers and mesothelioma.

  Workers may not begin to show signs of asbestos-related diseases from many years following first exposure. For example, the period of time between first exposure to asbestos and the appearance of lung cancer is generally 15 years or more; a lag of 30 to 35 years is not unusual. The lag period for development of mesothelioma and asbestosis is even greater, often as long as 40 to 45 years. There is also some evidence that family members of workers heavily exposed to asbestos face an increased risk of developing mesothelioma and perhaps other asbestos-related diseases, probably as a result of exposure to asbestos dust brought into the home on the shoes, clothing, skin and hair of workers.

  5.HOW GREAT IS THE RISK?

  Not all workers exposed to asbestos will develop diseases related to their exposure. In fact, many will not suffer any ill effects. Asbestos bonded in finished products is not a risk to health, as long as the product is not damaged or disturbed (for example, by sawing or drilling) in such a way as to release fibers into the air. Since the fibers are nearly indestructible, a risk exists if they are set free. Once the asbestos particles work their way into the body tissues, they tend to stay there indefinitely.

  6.HOW DOES SMOKING AFFECT RISK?

  Many studies have shown that the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure is particularly hazardous. While asbestos exposure itself can increase the risk of developing lung cancer, asbestos and cigarette smoking together greatly increases lung cancer risk over the already high risk due to smoking alone. Cigarette smokers, on average, are 10 times as likely to develop lung cancer as nonsmokers are. Smokers who are also heavily exposed to asbestos have been shown to be up to 90 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-exposed individuals who do not smoke.

  7.WHO NEEDS TO BE EXAMINED?

  Individuals who have been exposed (or suspect they have been exposed) to asbestos dust on the job, or at the home via a family contact, should inform their physician of their work history and any symptoms. A thorough physical examination, including a chest x-ray and lung function tests, may be recommended. Interpretation of the chest x-ray may require the help of a specialist (called a B-reader) who is experienced in reading x-rays for asbestos-related diseases. Other tests also may be necessary. The symptoms of asbestos-related diseases may not become apparent for many decades after exposure. If any of the following symptoms develop, a physical examination should be scheduled without delay: shortness of breath, a cough or change in cough pattern, unexplained weight loss, pain in the chest or abdomen, difficulty in swallowing, prolonged hoarseness, or blood in the stool.

  8.WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR ASBESTOS-RELATED DISEASES?

  The key to successful treatment of asbestos-related diseases lies in early detection. The health problems caused by asbestosis are due mainly to lung infections, like pneumonia, that attack weakened lungs. Early medical attention and prompt, aggressive treatment offer the best chance of success in controlling such infections. As a protective measure, depending on the situation, doctors may give one of the vaccines against influenza or pneumoccocal pneumonia.

  9.INDIVIDUALS EXPOSED TO ASBESTOS SHOULD:

  1. Stop smoking.2. Tell your physician you have been exposed to asbestos.3. Get regular health checkups, including chest x-rays.4. Get prompt medical attention for any respiratory illness.5. Use all protective equipment, work practices and safety procedures designed for working around asbestos.

  MALIGNANT MESOTHELIOMA

  What is it?

  Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer of the pleural (chest) or peritoneal (abdominal) cavity directly related to exposure to asbestos.

  How is it found?

  An x-ray or CT scan is often the first indication of mesothelioma . For confirmation of the diagnosis, a biopsy of the tissue is required.

  Malignant mesothelioma , a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or abdomen (the peritoneum). Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. Virtually all cases of malignant mesothelioma are attributable to asbestos exposure.

  Like most cancers, malignant mesothelioma is best treated when it is diagnosed early. Mesothelioma progresses through stages. In the advanced stages of mesothelioma , the cancer spreads beyond the lining of the chest to lymph nodes in the chest. Eventually the mesothelioma may spread to distant organs or tissues.

  Symptoms of malignant mesothelionma are unexplained weight loss, fatigue, shortness of breath, and/or chronic pain in the chest, shoulder or abdomen.

It's a long story, but I'll try to keep it short.. . Basically, we were in a flat of 5, and 3 of us wished to move to another place. We were polite and tolerant of all the constant abuse and lack of cooperation to get the best outcome as possible, and we decided to wait until the other 2 had found replacements before we moved out. After they said that they had (this was 2 months later, having endured their shit and constant abuse and blaming of us), we gave our three weeks notice for the place and moved out. On the day of our moving, however, we discovered that the remaining 2 had written a nasty letter to the real estate company, stating that we were in fact rude, abrupt, and gave them no notice or chance to find replacement flatmates at all (They pretty much just described how they had been over the two months). On seeing this, the real estate company made us liable for another 3 weeks rent as they claimed we had given no formal notice (even though we had). This was only coming about because the other 2 remaining had decided that they too were moving elsewhere. Before you assume, this had nothing to do with financial inability to cover the rent, as the place they moved to is costing them an extra $20 per week. Any how, this money was deemed to have to come out of our bond.. . Now what we are faced with is having to sign the bond refund four ways, between two of us that have moved out, and the other two that caused all the problems. However, one of the people who caused all the difficulty did not make any formal payments for the bond, and although she paid us under the table, we do not feel we have any legal obligation to pay her her quarter. Instead, this almost serves as a karma of sorts to help us recover in part what she played a large part in money ripped off of us.. . However, the plot thickens. The real estate company have seemingly sided with the other two, and are trying to effectively bully us into paying it quarterly, however we refuse to do so, as it was the fact that we apparently had given nothing formal in writing, that caused us to be liable for 3 weeks extra rent (that we most definitely could not afford), when she is now trying to claim the exact same thing, and that despite her not putting anything in formal writing, that she should still be eligible for a portion of the bond.. . If that makes any sense, or if you get the general jist of it, pleeeeease give us some advice. Or if not you, if you could let us know what course of action or what people we should talk to about getting this sorted.
